If you could see the amount of hatred I’ve been sent by teachers saying parents aren’t equipped to teach their children, you would understand why I said this. I’m not against teachers at all, and I don’t see teachers as the system really - I see the government and board of education as the creators of the system. And many people do believe you can’t learn things properly if you don’t learn it in a school, thus my reasoning for making this video. I’m not bashing anyone or saying one is better or worse but simply saying that the educational system as a whole has trained people to think if you don’t learn it in a school, you haven’t learned it properly or you aren’t qualified.

Thank you for writing back. I feel very honored that you even noticed my response. I guess I was feeling particularly vulnerable from some of the comments written in reference to your article. Our country has become full of "toxic rhetoric," which seems to keep us on edge when speaking to others. Our "filters" have fallen, and kindness is suffering. When I began teaching, mothers were chastised for putting their children in daycare. Then people would actually believe the statement "those that can do, those that can't teach." Gradually, society began to question our ability to make important decisions in choosing curriculum, textbooks, and the inclusion of children with special needs. We are told religion is missing in the schools (it's not), books are being banned (like teachers would allow young children to check out improper materials), and homework is tedious and takes away from family time (parents are asked to be involved in all school activities). I love teaching (can you tell?). Again, I have loved your activity boxes, art ideas, book suggestions, lunches, and watching your girls grow. I prayed for your dad and laughed at your recent exploits. I just want all teachers and teaching forms to be respected. Thank you, and I promise to keep subscribing (quietly!).

I’m happy to discuss! I wouldn’t put things out on the internet and not allow civil discourse. I think it’s good. I respect teachers so much and am grateful for them! I used to be one. But I also think there are major problems with the education system and I’m very tired of being told that parents “aren’t qualified” to teach their children. So I’m trying to share more of my opinions that are based on being on both sides of this debate since I was in the schools teaching, I was a daycare provider, and now I homeschool.

Questions 1. Who is telling you that parents aren't equipped to teach their children? We are their first teachers and continue throughout their lives 2. What problems are you referring to within the educational system? 3. Do you feel teacher performance is tied to pay and/or location? 4. I began teaching around the time PL 91-142 was implemented. It was the "inclusion " mandate. I was an itinerant teacher for the visually impaired in Idaho and Virginia. Do you feel teachers are being trained to understand all sorts of needs and behaviors adequately? Are they being asked to tackle too much? I am worried about states asking teachers to carry guns. Cursive handwriting class, yes. Gun handling class, nope. Only respond when you have time. It's just nice to talk to another teacher who is involved in an alternative program.
